Probe into police van incident that left two with knife wounds.
Man, 45, and 17-yearold female expected to appear in court after receiving hospital treatment for knife injuries
An independent watchdog has been appointed to investigate an incident inside a police van in Perth which left a missing teenager and a man with injuries.
The pair are understood to have sustained knife injuries after they were put into the police vehicle at the conclusion of a high-profile missing person search on Monday.
It’s believed they were being transported to a police station when the incident took place in the police van.
Stuart Lymer, 45, and the 17-year-old female, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been receiving treatment in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.
However, both were subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.
Police have confirmed they are expected to appear in court released from Ninewells.
The teenager had been reported missing from her home in Cannock, Staffordshire, on Friday, but police traced her and Lymer at Perth railway station on Monday.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Following an incident on Monday within a police vehicle in Perth, a 45-year-old man and 17-year-old woman have been arrested.
“Both are currently undergoing treatment at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee as a result of injuries sustained during the incident at Perth.
“They are expected to appear at court from custody over the coming days, after being released from the hospital.”
He added: “Police Scotland has referred the matter to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.”
The role of the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) was introduced in 2013 at the same time as Police Scotland was established.
The commissioner is appointed by Scottish ministers and is independent of the police service.
The role of the PIRC is to independently investigate incidents involving the police and independently review the way the police handle complaints from the public.
