MSP praises school project that brings ‘generations together’
An inter-generational school project that brings together pupils and older volunteers has been praised by Scotland’s minister for social security, Jean Freeman.
The MSP visited the Community School of Auchterarder to see the scheme in action. It was launched last year by national charity Generations Working Together and aims to improve literacy and numeracy in the school, as well as building community links, increasing wellbeing and tackling loneliness.
Ms Freeman recently launched the reducing loneliness consultation and will be looking at the impact the project has had so far.
The project is being piloted in Auchterarder and at Perth Grammar, where it will run until at least 2019.
Around 17 older volunteers have signed up, with more over-50s expected over the coming months.
Funding comes partly from the Pupil Equity Fund, as well as from other organisations such as The Gannochy Trust.
Ms Freeman said: “It’s a delight seeing young people enjoying learning with older volunteers at their side.
“We need to develop more ways of bringing generations together, not only for mutual learning but to also challenge stereotypes and break down barriers. We have to ensure our older people can continue to provide a valuable contribution to their communities after retirement and this new project is already reaping the benefits of their skills and experience.”
The project, which could be soon rolled out to other areas including Fife and Glasgow, was showcased at the Perth and Kinross learning event in February.
