Spotlight on Newport Pier

- The oldest picture of the pierhead in the 1870s. with Caroline Lindsay craigie@ thecourier.co.uk

Following on from the opening of the pier buildings in Newport-on-Tay after their stunning refurbishment by Dave and Liz Anderson, we thought it would be timely to look at some pictures from the pierhead area, sent in by local historian Mairi Shiels.

While the ferries were operating, this area around the pier was the real heart of the town. The ornate ferry buildings were erected in 1878, and along with the buildings opposite, housed many shops such as chemist, post office, grocer, fishmonger and optician. Look for the old stamp machines on the wall of the old post office opposite.

The first photo shows a busy day with people queuing for the Fifie. J T Young’s garage stretches all the way up Boat Road.

In the second photo, the ferry has just arrived as crowds make their way to the town .

The final picture shows probably the oldest photograph available of the area, possibly dating from the early 1870s.
