Thirty-five candidates were nominated for the 22 seats on Dundee’s new Education Authority . Miss Kynoch, a member of the retiring School Board, has declined to allow her name to be put forward. Mr Garnett Wilson, Newport, who is to stand for the Second Division, is a strictly independent candidate. There are nine candidates for the seven seats in the First Division, a similar number of aspirants for six seats in the Second Division while there are 11 candidates for the six seats in the Third Division.

Provisional applications for new certificates for two public houses were approved at Angus Licensing Court in Forfar yesterday. They were for a public-house in Dalziel Road, Tealing (James Phimister Stuart) and for a public-house in Monikie (George Jobson Forbes Fyvie). The Court also agreed that, in future, applications coming before the Court should first have local authority planning permission. Regarding the Tealing application, it was said the pub would provide a social facility which had always been lacking.

The attempted rescue of a couple stranded on Ben Nevis took a series of bizarre twists yesterday. After rescuers had battled to reach two climbers, a man and a woman, who were stuck on a ledge 4,200 feet up the mountain, they were told: “We don’t want to be rescued.” The rescue helicopter then backed off and after talking to the couple, it transpired that a different couple were stuck. They were then located by Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and taken off the mountain safe and well.

A global investment campaign launched by the UK Government could bring thousands of new jobs to Perth. Unveiled before an audience of influential businessmen and women at Cannes, the new Scottish Investment Portfolio calls for international developers to invest in and get involved with the city’s biggest ever infrastructure project. The document reveals plans for a new business park which could transform the city into a hub for innovative, green technology. The estate is part of the £140 million Perth West development.
