Enjoy net benefit from the ponds
MONIKIE’S Island and North ponds are fishing well and the lochs are restocked with rainbows from Welham Park Trout Farm in Yorkshire.
Dries and diawl bachs are effective in the evening with sedges hatching regularly so sedgehogs and hoppers work.
The Island Pond saw 24 day boats (44 rods) keeping 98 fish for 199lb 1oz and returning 29 and in the evening 11 boats (16 rods) keeping five for 10lb 10oz and returning 16.
The North Pond has seen little action but the one evening boat kept 10 fish for 21lb.
Some of the noted returns of the Island Pond included: Balbeggie AC, four boats (eight rods), 30 fish for 56lb 3oz and returning 10; Tom Melville and Jim Galloway kept 10 for 21lb; M Tidcombe and P Kilminster, 10 for 20lb 2oz.
Successful patterns include black cat, black and red booby, olive buzzer and black and green booby.
A mixed week at LOCH LEVEN with challenges but nice baskets recorded.
Joe Brown and Andy Young had three trout, the best weighing 4lb 7oz, all caught using a floating line on fairly big flies.
David Grierson and his brother also had three good fish on Saturday on the buzzer. And on Sunday, Lewis Kerr and his dad Brian had four trout, best estimated at 4lb 8oz.
Pike anglers are having to work fairly hard but Kenny Johnstone had five on Thursday, all on the fly and the best was 14lb.
Evening fishing is pretty difficult at the moment as there isn’t any appreciable hatch of yellow owl yet.
The last Scottish Club Championship heats saw a tight finish at LAKE OF MENTEITH, with two fish separating the top three clubs.
The heat went to Costa Ecosse represented by John Buchanan (4), Murray Hunter (4) and David Mateer (11) with a total of 19 fish.
The Leslie & Glenrothes AC team of Neill Duff (8), Stevie Anderson (6) and David Copland (4) were second with 18 fish and the Townhill AC team of Gordon Michie (7), John Michie (6) and Owen Cook (4) third with 17 fish.
Top individual rod was David Mateer with 11 for 23lb 0.9oz in the cages on cormorants, diawl bachs and boobies on a midge tip line.
There was some great top of the water sport at LOCHTER last week with many trout caught in the 5-8lb category and a few in double figures.
When overhead conditions were right the best fly was the daddy, allowed to float along the ripple. Steve Prince from Oldmeldrum caught 19 fish, one over 10lb and several around 6lb.
Davy Yule from Turriff also stayed in the Top Zone but used size 16 black klinkhammers when the “rise” came and brought 11 fish to the net.
Jim Weir used sparsely dressed spiders when overhead conditions were cloudy and he was very happy with his nine fish return. Fishing buddies Albert Trail and Bill Wood also came out for a late afternoon/evening session and they used buzzers and fabs and were both in double figures. Peter Young solely fished the muckle troot and his dogged determination paid off as he had 15 to the net. Graham Duthie concentrated on using a team of buzzers during his session and he had 10 fish as a result.
