MCCOLGAN TO REPRESENT TEAM EUROPE IN ‘THE MATCH’

-

ATHLETICS

Dundee Hawkhill Harrier Eilish McColgan is one of five Scots selected to represent Europe in ‘The Match’ against the USA in the Ukraine next Monday and Tuesday. The Match is a Ryder Cup-style championship event and takes place over two days in Minsk in the countdown to the Doha World Championships.

McColgan will contest the 3,000m, while Beth Dobbin runs in the 200m, Lynsey Sharp in the 800m and Jemma Reekie in the 1,500m. Jake Wightman is selected for the 1,500m.

A total of 28 British athletes are included in the European team. The match will see four athletes from each team contest each individual event, while each squad will also field two teams in the relays.

PRESTIGIOUS TITLE FOR ANNA Fife AC’s Anna Hedley bagged her most prestigious track title to date winning the England Athletics Under 17 women’s 3,000m championship at Bedford.

The St Andrews athlete was out on her own, finishing in 10 minutes 09.71 seconds – 10 seconds clear of runnerup Ines Curran (Gateshead). Hedley tops the 2019 UK under17 rankings for 3,000m with nine minutes 45.50 seconds from Scotstoun in May.

Hedley had earlier contested the 1,500m final, with only 20 minutes between the two events, placing second in 4:33.91 behind Abigail Ives (Basildon AC), who clear at the bell, went on to post 4:30.71.

Zoe Flower (Giffnock North) finished seventh in 4:43.54.

Sarah Coutts (Pitreavie) and Isla Calvert (Livingston) won their 800m heats in 2:15.66 and 2:13.36, while Katie Johnson (Edinburgh AC) won her U15 girls’ 800m heat in 2:15.58. Peter Scott (Fife AC) finished fifth in the U17 men’s 400m heats timed at 52.36 seconds.

HURDLES RECORD

Heather Paton (Birchfield H.) broke Pat Rollo’s (Pitreavie/Fife AC) longstanding Scottish women’s 100m hurdles record earlier this summer with a run of 13.34 seconds but this weekend improved that mark to 13.22 at Hendon, north London.

WORLD GOLD FOR DIXON

GB’s Aly Dixon claimed gold at the 50km World Championships in Brasov, Romania, breaking the world record for the distance in her very first ultra-marathon.

The Olympic marathoner, now aged 40, clocked 3:07:20 to take the title as she led a GB one-two ahead of Helen Davies, who ran 3:09:16.

CURLING

MUIRHEAD EDGES THRILLER Perthshire curler Eve Muirhead won a thrilling battle of two former world champions to edge closer to a quarter-final spot at the Oakville Fall Classic in Ontario.

Muirhead and her new-look line-up of Vicky Wright, Jennifer Dodds and Lauren Gray lost their opening game on Friday but easily won the next before meeting Swiss skip Binia Feltscher, who succeeded the Scot as world champion in 2014. Feltscher counted four stones at the second end to lead 4-1, but a remarkable burst of scoring put Muirhead 6-4 ahead and she held on to win 6-5. Another victory over Montreal’s Laurie St-Georges will guarantee qualification for the knockout stages.

FOOTBALL

BROUGHTY BREEZE THROUGH The first of the Fairfield Sport and Leisure Cup semi-finals between Shotz and Broughty United was played in the usual extreme conditions of Arbroath’s Victoria Park and in the end the Ferry side “breezed” through by 3-2, writes our Amateur correspondent.

With the gale in their favour the visitors dominated the first half and ended it with a 3-0 half-time lead courtesy of Nick Mann, Ranald Bowie and Greg Houston.

While defence should have been the priority for United in round 2 the Arbroath side countered with two goals right after the break from Donnie Smith and a Ryan Robb penalty. Although at that stage the home side appeared to have the upper hand United held out despite an avalanche on their goal in the last 15 minutes. The other semi between Fintry and Lowson United is likely to take place in a fortnight as Scottish Cup ties have priority next week.

The Tay Valley Shield section of eight has proved to be innovative and three teams – Merpro, AHSFP and probably Kirriemuir Thistle – have already made it through to the semi-finals. Newport, Invergowrie and Wellbank are battling for the last spot. Of interest is the form of Merpro who appear to be a cut above the rest having comfortably won all six of their matches to date and they appear to be back in “premier” winning form after their season in abeyance. On Saturday they defeated Forfar West End 8-0 unusually through eight individual scorers – Graham, Greig, Aitken, Bruce, Spink, MacDougall, Cowie and Findlay.

In the Premier there were three matches with the others taking advantage of a free week. Lowson United continued their good form from last season, winning 3-0 at Tayside Fire Brigade.

A Mark Godfrey free-kick, a screamer from Mark MacDonald and a third from Craig Simpson kept Lowson on track.

In the Angus derby Finavon strolled to a 6-1 win over Montrose, while the Carnoustie YM v Lochee United match ended in a 3-3 draw

A Jack McMillan brace and a 40-yard belter from Ian Robertson gave the Gowfers a share of the points. On Wednesday the Midlands Select take on a Perthshire Select for the Reid Trophy. Kick off is 7.20pm.
