Bluebells see off stubborn Thistle

-

Lochee United’s passage to a William Hill first round tie against Edinburgh University was never really in doubt as they defeated a stubborn Lothian Thistle side 5-2 at Thomson Park.

Goals from Danny Kavanagh and Scott McComiskie fired the Bluebells into a two-goal lead in the first quarter of an hour.

Thistle responded through Steve Wringe just before the break, but Kevin Milne bundled in a third on 56 minutes.

Still the visitors refused to lie down and a Darren Smith penalty reduced the arrears with 20 minutes left.

However, Danny Millar and McComiskie scored in the last 10 minutes with Thistle down to 10 men after Connor McGregor’s dismissal.

Hill of Beath advanced after a 2-0 win away to Threave Rovers and will now meet Gretna 2008, who were on the receiving end against Kelty Hearts on Saturday (see below).

Joe Kinnonmonth gave them the lead after 26 minutes and Regen Lumsden’s last-minute strike sealed their passage.

Jeanfield Swifts were also in last night’s draw, but still have to negotiate their tie with Linlithgow Rose, which was postponed. That is scheduled for Saturday with a home tie against Highland League Huntly awaiting the winners.

Barry Ferguson’s Kelty will take on Auchinleck Talbot, who reached the fifth round last season, beating Ayr on the way.
