Cowden come from behind to win – while City lose out on Price

COWDENBEATH 2 BRECHIN CITY 1

Brechin City’s search for a new manager will stretch into this week after Elgin boss Gavin Price became the second candidate to turn down the Glebe Park club.

Former Stranraer and Dumbarton boss Stephen Aitken said no last midweek due to a clash with his work outside of football and the travelling involved and now Price, who played for Brechin as a striker, has opted to stay at Borough Briggs.

Brechin were given permission to speak to the 44-year-old on Thursday.

However, after discussions, their approach was rebuffed with Price saying: “I was offered the job at Brechin on Friday and after sleeping on things I turned it down.

“I believe that the squad we have at Elgin just now is as good as it has ever been and I could not give that up.

“I believe that we can have a really good season, so I am pleased to be staying.”

The Angus club, who parted company with Barry Smith a fortnight ago, could now turn their attention to Cowdenbeath boss Gary Bollan, who is entering the final few months of his contract at the Blue Brazil and whose side beat Brechin 2-1 at the weekend.

Cowden had to come from behind to record a third successive home league win which propelled the Central Park side into third place.

Bollan said: “After going behind so early we managed to get level quite soon, once again showing resilience and character.

“Over the piece I was pleased and we have taken nine points out of 15 in our opening games and I feel the group of players we now have are moving the club forward.”

Brechin arrived at a windy Central Park in a confident mood having earned their first win of the campaign the previous week and took the lead after only two minutes when Ryan McCord fired a low, right-foot shot from the edge of the box into the far corner.

The visitors’ joy only lasted four minutes with Archie Thomas firing home an equaliser from 18 yards following a good build-up from Taylor and Smith.

Thomas was then denied twice by keeper Pat O’Neil before his side got their winner three minutes from the break.

Renton was brought down in the box by Hill and Fraser Mullen scored from the resultant spot-kick.

Interim Brechin boss Stevie Campbell said: “If someone had said before kick-off if we were going to be only one goal behind at half-time with that wind, I would have taken it.

“I asked the players to press a wee bit higher in the second half and made three personnel changes and two system changes.

“We tried everything we could to get back into the game.”

“We put Cowdenbeath under pressure with one cleared off the line and two which went just past the post.”
