Adam races to fourth British GT title

-

Fifer Jonny Adam landed a recordbreaking fourth British GT title in the most dramatic of his Donington Deciders.

The 35-year-old Aston Martin factory driver’s 2019 success was sealed in the stewards’ room long after the chequered flag dropped on a final round thriller in the GT3 title chase, with a post-race penalty for a Lamborghini rival elevating Adam and TF Sport teammate Graham Davidson into the fifth place which was enough to see them leapfrog rivals Sam De Haan and Johnny Cocker in the final standings.

Adam and fellow Scot Davidson had headed for the Leicestershire circuit as one of five crews in contention for the senior title, and with just four minutes left on the clock they were in the box seat for the title.

But controversy struck when Adam’s Vantage GT3 was hit by the Lamborghini Huracan of Dennis Lind, allowing rival Cocker to take advantage and relegate the Kirkcaldy racer to sixth – half a point shy of the championship crown.

An inevitable post-race investigation saw WPI Motorsport driver Lind landed with a five-second penalty, elevating the Scottish duo into fifth and on to the title by a 2.5 point margin – the narrowest of Adam’s wins with four different co-drivers in the past five years.

It secured a drivers’ title double for TF Sport after Tom Canning and Ash Hand took their Vantage GT4 to overall glory in the junior category.

Le Mans winner Adam, pictured, said: “It’s been a brilliant event, for everyone in the team and on both sides of the garage too.

“I think we were all a bit nervous coming into the weekend, but it really couldn’t have gone any better – or any closer.

“I’m chuffed to bits and really happy for Graham as he’s driven so well, so I’m delighted.”

North east-based Davidson said: “It’s a fantastic result and there were doubts, but in the end we got the job done.

“A huge thank you to TF Sport and Jonny for a very memorable season.”
