Spot on Webster’s celebration was only ‘tongue in cheek’

CLYDE 0 MONTROSE 2

Montrose’s new goal machine Graham Webster says he hopes Clyde fans don’t take his weekend celebration the wrong way.

The 27-year-old netted the opener for the Gable Endies in a 2-0 win at Broadwood that sees them move off the bottom of League 1.

Webster celebrated his penaltykick goal by running over to the incensed home support and rubbing it in, but he hopes they don’t take it to heart.

He said: “I was getting pelters at the start of the game and when I scored it was just heat of the moment.”

“It was just one of these things, a little bit tongue in cheek. I hope they don’t take it personally because I’ve got nothing against the Clyde fans at all. But if they’re happy enough to give somebody pelters then they’ve got to take a wee bit back as well.

“I’m never usually on the penalties but I scored two last week and confidence was high so I thought why not and just hit it in the corner as hard as I could. Martin Rennie, who was on the bench, usually takes them but he missed a few last year.”

Webster’s opener arrived at the end of a half the visitors had totally dominated. Stewart Petrie’s side could have been 3-0 up inside the opening half an hour with Liam Callaghan, Blair Lyons and winger Cammy Ballantyne all going close.

The first goal did arrive when right-back – also named Cammy Ballantyne – won a penalty following a challenge from Martin McNiff and Webster converted the spot-kick before letting the home support know all about it.

Forward Joel MacBeath then netted his second in as many weeks following good work from both Ballantynes. The striker’s finish was crisp as Petrie’s men netted a second goal in the space of a few minutes to shock the Clyde fans.

Their victory could have been more substantial too with Ballantyne and Andrew Steeves going close late on. But one sour note on a good afternoon was the straight red card dished out to Martin Rennie.

“It’s not an easy place to come,” Webster said. “Especially after winning last week you want to go on a run of games so we’re delighted with that.

“For us to get the second goal today and get that cushion was massive. Clyde threw everything at us in the last 15 minutes and maybe on another day they would have scored.”
