Reds shake off early scare to see off Spurs

PREMIER LEAGUE: Salah penalty sends Liverpool six clear after Kane’s early header at Anfield

- CARL MARKHAM

Liverpool returned to winning ways by beating Tottenham 2-1 yesterday to move six points clear again at the top of the Premier League table.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had seen their 100% start to the league campaign end at Manchester United last week but they responded by coming from behind to see off Spurs.

Harry Kane silenced Anfield inside the opening minute by nodding home from close range after Son Heung-min’s deflected shot came back off a post.

Spurs had goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to thank for reaching halftime in the lead, but they should have gone further ahead early in the second when Son rounded Alisson but could only hit the crossbar from a tight angle.

And Liverpool soon equalised as Jordan Henderson’s deflected effort finally found a way past Gazzaniga before Serge Aurier’s clumsy foul on Sadio Mane allowed Mohamed Salah to score from the spot.

Manchester City had cut Liverpool’s lead to three points with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Manchester United scored their 2,000th Premier League goal and recorded a first away league win since

February by beating Norwich 3-1 in an eventful clash at Carrow Road.

Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay scored the landmark goal to give United the lead after 21 minutes.

Tim Krul saved penalties from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial but both players later managed to beat the Norwich goalkeeper from open play.

Onel Hernandez scored a late consolation for the hosts.

Arsenal threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home to Crystal Palace.

Central defenders Sokratis Papastathopoulos and David Luiz both scored in the opening nine minutes to seemingly put the Gunners in control.

But first Luka Milivojevic scored from the spot after Wilfried Zaha went down in the area and, having initially been booked for diving, was awarded a spotkick following a VAR intervention.

Jordan Ayew then levelled the game in the 52nd minute before Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka was substituted and, following cheers from the home fans, waved his arms, cupped his ear and appeared to swear twice before tearing off his shirt as he made his way off.

Sokratis thought he had scored a winner but VAR ruled it out after a lengthy delay for an apparent foul in the build up.

Wolves came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at Newcastle.

The home side took the lead when Jamaal Lascelles headed in fellow centre-back Federico Fernandez’s cross in the 37th minute.

But Wolves improved after the break and Jonny levelled with 17 minutes left.

Newcastle ended the game with 10 men after midfielder Sean Longstaff was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Ruben Neves.
