Late goal takes some shine off Buesa’s silver medal
Jordan Buesa went from the high of collecting a silver medal at world level to a massive low as Fife Flyers slipped to their tenth straight league defeat.
It was a bitter blow for the 19-yearold Scot, who must now prepare for two bruising battles next weekend.
Fife, who are bottom of the Elite League, entertain second-placed Cardiff Devils on Saturday before visiting Scottish rivals Glasgow Clan on Sunday in a crucial battle.
Troon-born Buesa said Sunday’s last-gasp defeat to Nottingham Panthers with a goal 17 seconds from time was a tough one to take.
Buesa had opened the scoring after two minutes and Carlo Finucci fired the ailing Kirkcaldy club 2-0 ahead five minutes later.
The talented teenager, who was part of the Great Britain squad which lost 6-3 in the Division Two, Group A, world under-20 final to Japan in Vilnius, Lithuania, said it was vitally important for Flyers to regroup.
Buesa added: “Being 2-0 up at the start and then 2-2 and losing the goal 17 seconds from the end was so disheartening. We played a good game but luck is not going our way.”
Fife have 25 points from 36 games, with Dundee Stars on 28 points from 37 fixtures. Then there is a gap of five points between Clan and sixth-placed Guildford Flames, who have only iced in 33 fixtures.
Eighth-placed Manchester Storm occupy the final play-off slot and they have 30 points from 35 fixtures with Glasgow Clan on 32 points from 35 outings.
Buesa said the international trip had been a good experience.
He added: “We got a silver medal and I was really proud. It was unfortunate not to get gold but that was my last tournament for the under-20s and the silver was a good way to go.”
