Paisley Liberals have decided; Asquith is to contest the bye-election. At a meeting of the Liberal Associatio­n last night two names were put forward – Mr Asquith and Mr Watson of Edinburgh, the ex-Premier being chosen by 93 votes against 75. Dundee is to be one of the objectives of Labout at the next general election. Mr Wilkie retires then and there is talk of Labour putting up two members with a view to ousting Mr Churchill. Captain Shaw is Forfarshir­e’s MP and said Asquithism was “in the crinoline stage.”

50 years ago

Four men lost their lives, one is still missing, and there was only a single survivor when the Fraserburg­h lifeboat Duchess of Kent overturned yesterday in the North Sea while on a mercy mission. It was the second major lifeboat tragedy for the Buchan port in recent times. Yesterday’s drama began in the darkness of early morning when a message was received that a Danish fishing boat, Opal of Skagen, was leaking badly and in danger of sinking in the heavy seas. A massive rescue operation was mounted.

A group of Dundee pensioners are anxiously waiting to confirm a possible £134,000 National Lottery win. The 10-member syndicate tuned in to BBC1 as usual on Saturday night in the hope of matching the numbers on their ticket. It is believed the syndicate could be in line for a major prize. But a group spokespers­on was last night reluctant to disclose just how much money they think they have won. One member was advised she would have to wait until today to have the win confirmed.

A supporter’s shoes “went up in flames” when he was hit by a firework during Saturday’s stormy Fife derby, it has emerged. The match was marred by the missile-throwing in the wake of Raith Rovers’ first goal against Dunfermlin­e in the Scottish Cup fourth round clash. Raith, watched by fan and former prime minister Gordon Brown, won the game 3-0. Rovers chairman Bill Clark revealed three incendiary devices were hurled, one which burned the pitch and another which hit a fan.
