The question of accommodation in institutions under their control worried Dundee Parish Councillors last night. At a special meeting of the Poorhouse committee, Mr David Mitchell, the convener, stated on the subject of increased accommodation for nurses at the East Poorhouse Hospital and the Parish Council had approved of the sketch plans. He moved that Mr David Sharpe, the master of works, be instructed to prepare working plans which would be handed over to the Works Committee for the necessary action.

Dundee people will still be assessing today the cost of damage caused in a 90-minute thunderstorm yesterday afternoon, when an estimated 2.5 million tons of rain poured down on the city in one of the worst storms for many years. A total of 1.86 inches fell during the deluge. Lightning flashed and thunder crashed as the rains cascaded down between 10 and 11.30. One of the many lightning bolts sliced 30 feet off the spire of St Andrews Parish Church in Cowgate sending tons of masonry crashing down.

A new UK-wide awards scheme, including a Scottish-only winner, to recognise the work of volunteers was launched by Prime Minister John Major during a visit to St Andrews yesterday. The details of the project, along with news of further financial support of up to £800,000 for volunteering as part of the Make A Difference Initiative, were outlined by Mr Major during a reception to recognise the work of volunteers from Fife and Tayside in St Andrews University’s Parliament Hall.

Police are hunting vandals who torched a minibus that provides a lifeline transport service for disabled children. The vehicle, owned by the MyBUS social enterprise in Leven, was destroyed by fire early on Saturday. It is understood Police Scotland are treating the blaze as suspicious. MyBUS used the vehicle to take children with complex additional needs to school. The organisation also transports vulnerable members of the community to lunch clubs and outings. Director Mary Parry said: “Just why?”
