The duke at the YMCA

The Rev Graeme Bruce of Ferryden emails: “I remember being present at the Dundee YMCA when the Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by Lord Airlie, came for the reopening of the building in Constitution Road after extensive refurbishment.

“The general secretary of Dundee YMCA at that time, I am sure, was Leslie Lewthwaite and it was much to his management and encouragement along with fundraising that the refurbishment took place.

“During the visit, there was a display by the gymnastic group and I also think that a presentation was made regarding the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. The problem I have is that I cannot remember the date of the visit – some time in the late 1950s perhaps. I would now be pleased to discover any further memories of the good old days at the YM in Constitution Road.”
