“As the nation united in sadness at the news of Prince Philip’s death,” emails Roderick Stewart of Dronley, “Dundee readers may remember that, before his involvemen­t with RRS Discovery and the Maritime Trust, he had also played his part in the saving of HMS Unicorn.

“This photograph (see below) shows Prince Philip taking the salute from his RNR Royal Guard at the ceremony on September 26 1968 when Unicorn’s ownership was passed from the Ministry of Defence to the Unicorn Preservati­on Society.

“The prince always maintained his interest in Dundee’s grand old lady, while

HRH the Princess Royal continues this valuable royal support as patron of the society.”
