Into place’ after break
Fife farmers will finally get the chance to celebrate the bicentenary of their annual show when the flags fly and the gates open at Kinloss on the outskirts of Cupar next Saturday.
Show president, Andrew Stevenson from Bonerbo Farm, Anstruther, confirms the Fife Agricultural Association is pulling out all the stops to mark the last 200 years of farming in the Kingdom.
He said: “There will be footage of a horse-drawn binder played on a big screen as well as a display of hand tools and the earliest tractors that were used here.”
A “time tunnel” marquee will feature exhibits, memorabilia and videos, including an account of the numerous small farming societies that amalgamated to form today’s association.
Vintage machinery and heavy horses are always popular attractions at shows and this year’s parade of “farming through the ages” is being run by the Fife Vintage Agricutural Machinery Club and is by invitation only.
The showground’s grass is cut and ready for the marquees to be erected this week by the committee and volunteers, although Mr Stevenson admits they are trying to remember where everything goes after the enforced two-year gap.
“We’re excited, but a bit daunted after Covid brought everything to a standstill,” he said.
“But once we get started I’m sure it’ll all fall into place.”
All the usual classes will be running, including pedigree and commercial cattle and sheep as well as heavy horses and the popular light horse section for both in-hand and ridden ponies.
There are also opportunities for young handlers to compete with cattle, sheep, Shetland pony and Clydesdale horses. Other competitions include a dog show and a pet show.
There will be a game fair with demonstrations of falconry, ferret racing, gundogs and angling, together with demonstrations of shearing and farriery.
The usual crafts and home produce marquees, 150 trade stands, a cookery theatre and food and drink marquee will be there together with main ring entertainment.
