Topless smash-up at council house cost taxpayers £1k

Atopless man’s rampage at a Perth council house left taxpayers with a £1,000 repair bill.

Ewan Grant smashed windows and lobbed broken furniture at police officers during a tense stand-off in the city’s Drummond Crescent.

The 32-year-old, who is serving time for biting part of a man’s nose off in a bloody city centre brawl, appeared at Perth Sheriff Court and admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive way on April 26, last year.

Fiscal depute Stuart Hamilton said: “At around 9.10pm, police received numerous 999 calls in relation to the accused smashing windows at his property.

“When officers arrived, they saw that three panes within the living room window were broken, as well as one pane in the bedroom.

“Broken glass was strewn all over the road.”

The prosecutor told the court: “The accused was observed to be standing at his window topless, while shouting and swearing at police officers.”

Grant was heard shouting “f *** off ” and “get to f ***”.

Mr Hamilton said: “He was seen using a kitchen pan to smash the fourth pane of glass in the living room.

“He then threw a glass coffee lid out of the window and in the general direction of officers.”

Police called for back-up, and more units soon arrived on the scene.

“The accused continued shouting and swearing,” said the fiscal depute.

“He began repeatedly hitting the bedroom window in an unsuccessful attempt to smash it.

“The accused then threw a pan out of the window, again in the direction of

police, followed by pieces of broken furniture.”

Officers kept their distance, but persuaded Grant to come to his door.

He eventually agreed and was arrested.

Mr Hamilton confirmed that Perth and Kinross Council estimated £1,000 of damage was caused to the property.

Solicitor Steve Lafferty, defending, urged the court to consider an alternative to prison.

“Clearly, this would normally justify a custodial sentence.

“But Mr Grant has been fully engaging with services in prison, and it is perhaps in the public interest to deal with this by way of a community-based disposal.”

Sheriff Francis Gill

agreed to defer sentence until next month for background reports.

But he warned Grant: “I must stress to you that all sentence options remain open to the court.”

Grant was jailed for two years in February for a grisly attack that left victim Robert Garrick disfigured.

The court heard he bit through Mr Garrick’s nose, taking part of it completely off.

The victim has been forced to save money for plastic surgery.

Last year, Grant was jailed for smashing his way into Tesco on Perth’s Edinburgh Road at 4am.

His bizarre supermarket sweep, in which he threw about flowers and wine, was caught on CCTV.
