LEEDS LEFT ON THE BRINK AS WEST HAM FIGHT BACK

-

Leeds were shoved to the brink of relegation from the Premier League after their mustwin match at West Ham ended in a 3-1 defeat.

Leeds got off to a great start at the London Stadium, with Rodrigo volleying them into an early lead, but Sam Allardyce’s rescue mission reached crisis point after goals from Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen and Manuel Lanzini denied them the victory their new manager admitted they needed to have any realistic chance of staying up.

Allardyce arrived at Elland Road as a lastditch appointment with four games to go, but his first three matches have provided just two points.

Now Leeds need to beat Tottenham next weekend and hope a Bournemouth side with nothing to play for can do them an almighty favour at Everton.

Moreover, should Leicester beat Newcastle tonight the Whites will start the final day second from bottom.

● Erik ten Hag praised Manchester United’s collective efforts defensively after David de Gea collected the Golden Glove award for the goalkeeper with the most Premier League clean sheets.

United’s 1-0 win at Bournemouth brought De Gea his 17th shutout of the campaign, taking him clear of Liverpool’s Alisson Becker, as well as helping the team to within a point of Champions League qualification.

Ten Hag also singled out central defenders Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane in helping United to backto back clean sheets that have now virtually secured their place in the top four.

“A clean sheet is always very important to be successful in a season,” said Ten Hag.

“I think it’s telling something about our structure, our plan, and it’s telling also something about dedication from the team.”

United’s win was secured courtesy of Casemiro’s brilliantly improvised goal in the ninth minute, hooking the ball into the roof of the net.

Dundee United women secured their Premier League status with a nerve-shredding draw against Hamilton Accies at Gussie Park.

United entered the contest knowing that avoiding defeat against the Lanarkshire outfit would ensure they avoided a relegation playoff, given their two-point advantage over the visitors.

Graeme Hart’s side claimed the lead from the penalty spot in the second half.

Leigha Dobbins was felled in the box and Danni Mcginley stepped up to calmly slot home her 17th goal of a splendid campaign.

However, Accies ensured a fraught finale when Eilidh Austin restore parity going

into the closing stages. However, the hosts held firm, sealing a 10th-placed finish in United’s maiden SWPL season; a fine achievement as they seek to consolidate and progress.

The Tangerines will be joined by Montrose in the top flight next term after they won the SWPL2 title.

Meanwhile, Lauren Davidson’s added-time strike gave Glasgow City a 1-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox to clinch the SWPL1 title in the most dramatic fashion.

Glasgow City, Rangers and Celtic could all have won the championship going into the final weekend of the season.

On a tension-filled last day shoot-out, it looked like

Celtic were going to emerge champions as they took a 2-0 lead over Hearts at Parkhead through goals from Caitlin Hayes and Natasha Flint.

Rangers and Glasgow City were playing out a nervejangling stalemate in Govan until the second of four added minutes when Davidson squeezed the ball in from six yards to snatch the title from Celtic Park.

There was time for Glasgow City keeper Lee Gibson to make a crucial save to keep the Light Blues out.

Glasgow City finished the season on 83 points with Celtic on 81 and Rangers 78, with the top two spots also securing a place in the Champions League.
