Kings, queens – and Courier – mark UK rally

- ISLA GLEN

Agroup of German adventurers have succeeded in getting their faces in The Courier as part of a charity challenge.

The Knights of the Island rally is a road trip across the UK in which participants are not allowed to use GPS, navigation systems or motorways.

Only modern classic or vintage cars are permitted and they must be 10 years or older.

The trip lasts 10 days and almost 100 teams are travelling through England, Wales and Scotland raising funds for a charity of their choosing.

It invites visitors to discover the “soul of Great Britain” as they motor through “the lands of the knights, lords and ladies, and kings and queens”.

Teams must complete challenges, each worth a set amount of points.

Three landed in Perth on the final stretch having visited Dundee.

They have travelled from Dover to Wales, up through the Lake District to Glasgow and then round the Highlands.

Team Storre Gra Pilen is made up of Sabrina Fiemann and Alexander Scherzer, in a 1992-plate Volvo XC940.

Rebecca and Martin Meyer make up Team Gertigoeswild, named after their Land Rover Defender.

Team Gebruder Slim consists of Louis Gehrmann – a former Perth Grammer pupil who left the Fair City 10 years ago – and Marcel Frank, in a 2004 Mitsubishi Pajero.

Team Storre are collecting donations for Bethel’s Children and Youth Hospice, while Team Gertigoeswild are raising money for the Bone

Marrow Donation Campaign in Bavaria.

The teams are currently trying to finish the photo competition.

One challenge is to be photographed by local press – and The Courier was happy to oblige

Each photograph is Ukthemed, such as King Arthur and Excalibur, requiring an image of a team member standing on a stone holding a real sword.

Others included Sheep Charlie! – asking for a snap of a sheep driving the vehicle – and Steve Mc-queen where the team dress like a Scot and the Queen, then run to their car in a Le Mans-style start.
