Former Chile coach Orlando Aravena, 86

-

The coach who led the Chilean national team at the 1990 World Cup has died at the age of 86.

Orlando Aravena was in charge of Chile between 1987 and 1989, with the highlight being the World Cup appearance and also reaching the final of the 1987 Copa America when his team were defeated 1-0 by Uruguay.

However, his legacy was tarnished with what many claim is the biggest shame in Chilean football.

In a decisive match between Brazil and Chile in the qualifiers for the 1990 World Cup at the Maracana, goalkeeper Roberto Rojas deliberately injured himself to avoid a loss.

Rojas took advantage of a flare thrown into the area and cut his own eyebrow to pretend he had been hit by the projectile.

The referee was forced to suspend the match and give the victory to Chile.

At the time of the incident, Brazil were winning 1-0 and securing their place in the World Cup.

However, Rojas confessed months later that he had actually cut himself with a blade.

Due to this scandal, Fifa punished Chile and left the country out of the qualifiers for the 1994 World Cup.

Aravena and Astengo, a defender, were also suspended.

Rojas, the main character at fault of course, was banned but later rehabilitated.

As a coach, Aravena developed his entire career in Chilean football.

He went through ColoColo, Audax Italiano, Universidad Catolica, O’Higgins, Union Espanola,

Rangers, Everton, Santiago Morning, and Palestino.

As a player, he also did not leave Chile. He played for Magallanes, La Serena, Palestino, Colo-Colo, and Nublense.
