Runs are Ben’s main Curran-cy

-

WEYBRIDGE talisman Sarel Erwee believes Ben Curran could soon make it a trio of brothers on the big stage after a series of impressive performances in the Surrey Championship.

The 19-year-old has a long way to go to match Sam and Tom, who have already been pegged as England stars of the future following their antics with Surrey since bursting onto the scene.

So far Ben has taken a circuitous route into professional cricket, but the middle brother of three clearly has plenty of talent himself.

He is part of the MCC Young Cricketers side competing in second XI competitions and his average for Weybridge this year is currently hovering just below 50.

Curran scored a quick-fire 39 off 22 balls in Weybridge’s 67-run win over Sunbury and Erwee said: “Batting 30 overs and needing 211 is a massive task but we started off really well. Ben got us off to a flyer and in the driving seat.

“Ben has been here for four seasons and it is his first year in MCC Young Cricketers. He has done very well and matured, he has contributed hugely. I can 100 per cent see him having a big future.”

Erwee has some pedigree too. In 2013 he broke a record for the number of consecutive centuries – four – in the Surrey Championship.

“It has helped my cricket awareness playing in England,” added Kwazulu-Natal man Erwee, who has scored two-half centuries so far this term.“It has certainly progressed my career.”
