Keep an eye out for Meehan, says skip

- By Peter Rogers

THE NAME Harry Meehan won’t ring any bells yet, but give it ten years and it may well be far more recognisable.

That’s according to Birkenhead Park captain Chris Davies – who is predicting a big future for the 16-yearold.

With his team struggling at 37-5, Meehan scored a half-century to help Birkenhead to a winning first innings total of 186 over Lytham last weekend.

Saturday’s match was Meehan’s 29th already in Premier League cricket, and the seamer has 23 wickets to his name in those games, an impressive figure considering his age limits the amount of balls he is allowed to bowl.

With an average of 13 at the crease, the teenager is regarded primarily as a bowler, but Davies is adamant he can become a genuine all-rounder after his score of 55 with the bat.

“He’s only 16 years of age but mentally he’s 25. I think he’s going to be one of the best all-rounders, I can’t believe counties like Lancashire or Cheshire haven’t picked him up yet,” Davies said.

“Let’s not put too much pressure on him, he’s only 16. Mark my words in ten years time he’s going to be exceptional, how far he can go that’s up to him.

“He can still only bowl seven overs because of his age, which is disappointing, but he’s definitely going to be an all-rounder, not just a bowler.”

It also proved a vital result for Birkenhead – who are still 48 points from safety – though Davies remains hopeful his side can avoid the drop with five rounds left to play.

“If we can get some runs on the board I think we can beat anybody, we’re just starting to find a little bit of belief.”
