The Cricket Paper - - OPINION -

THE toss rule in the County Championship, where visiting teams get the option of bowling first, will continue in 2017 and it’s great to see the ECB being proactive.

It’s about trying to build for Test cricket but it was tough for bowlers this season. Maybe they will bring in the new ball a bit earlier because we all want to see contests between bat and ball. There were too many matches being dominated by the bat this summer.

I remember when Tiflex balls were used and it was so tough for opening batsmen. We don’t quite want to see that again but we want more balance.

Batsmen should still have the upper hand, to make the bowlers work harder, but there were too many double hundreds in the early part of the year.We did see more results as the season went on so captains and groundsmen were adjusting.

Spinners, such as Jack Leach and Jeetan Patel, had successful seasons so the idea it would helps spinners can be seen as working. But after the trial of this season, it will be interesting to see how the 2017 season goes.
