It was time Notts got credit for that ‘81 win
PAUL Edwards’s piece on Nottinghamshire’s 1981 Championship win was a pleasure to read.
Their achievement was a bit under the radar due to the 1981 Ashes win.
For all the controversy over the seamer-friendly wickets at Trent Bridge, it should not be forgotten that Clive Rice and Richard Hadlee were magnificent overseas cricketers.
They gave so much to Nottinghamshire’s first Championship title in 52 years.
What people have often overlooked is that at least seven of the 1981 team were still around six years later when they won the title for the second time in the decade.
It was also remarkable in that three of their attack in 1987 (who also played in 1981) – Clive Rice, Richard Hadlee and Eddie Hemmings, were 35 or over.
Their second title was just one example of how good teams stayed together for five or more years in those days. That is not so prevalent now in a fluid game. DAVID RIMMER Hertford Heath
