DEREK Pringle’s Jan­uary 13 study, Proud English­men or just crick­et­ing mer­ce­nar­ies, notes Eoin Mor­gan, Kevin Pi­etersen and Tony Greig as play­ers from over­seas who cap­tained Eng­land (as did Gubby Allen, whose Aus­tralian ori­gins he men­tions).

And as far back as 1903-4 Eng­land were led to Ashes vic­tory in Aus­tralia by Plum Warner, born in the West Indies in 1873. Ea­ger to talk cricket, I met him in 1955, but Sir Pel­ham in­sisted on hold­ing forth about the great­ness of Win­ston Churchill. MUR­RAY HEDGCOCK
