Who makes the most in battle of high-scorers?

Durham v Leics Fri, May 5, Roseworth Terrace, Gosforth, 11:00

- By Will Reilly

THE One-Day Cup has been littered with brilliant batting efforts and Durham and Leicestershire face off in Gosforth fresh from being on differing ends of incredible knocks.

Mark Pettini’s sensational 159 for Leicestershire against Warwickshire put them right in the mix in the North as they made it two wins from three so far this season.

Meanwhile Durham could only watch in awe on Wednesday as Jonny Bairstow somehow denied them a second win of the campaign, hammering a brilliant and brutal 174 – his highest List A score.

That came after Durham set a challenging target with 335-5 against Yorkshire, so there is no question that Jon Lewis’ side are in form with the bat.

But against a Leicestershire team racking up the runs themselves they will need to tighten up their bowling if they are to get back in the mix for the knock-out stages.

And Foxes all-rounder Tom Wells is bullish over his team’s chances to build on the momentum gained against Warwickshire, knowing that they will have to keep piling on the runs.

He said: “The way the game is going these days you never know if you’ve got a defendable score, people are chasing down scores of 400.

“We take a lot of confidence up to Durham, if we can win that we’re right in the hat in the competition.”
