Newport’s defence of 2016 title looks strong

-

NEWPORT’S side looks even stronger on paper than the one that took the South Wales Premier League title last year and head coach Mike Knight insists they expect to defend their crown.

South African Matt Norris takes over the captaincy duties from Michael Clayden, although the latter will remain a key top-order batsman.

Throw in the additions of Mark Wallace and Dean Cosker following their retirements from first-class cricket and the side looks well-furnished in all areas.

On the opening weekend of the new season they cruised to a 129run win over Pontarddulais, Harry Powell the pick of the bowlers as the visitors were skittled out for 93.

Clayden had earlier hit 59 and while all signs point to a strong defence of their crown, Knight is excited about the influence his two new veterans can have on the side.

“It was a great season last year and to be champions was almost a bonus,” he said. “We knew that we had a good side and wanted to finish high up the table but as the season progressed we got into a winning run and managed to get over the line.

“This year we are hoping to retain our title and we feel that we have a good side with the added experience of Mark Wallace, which will be a help to Matt.

“I think our side has evolved through the years after some tough experiences. They are a harder side to beat now and know how to win games.”
