Waller: Broadwater are ready for the big time

- By Theo Nicholas

BROADWATER are in the Sussex Cricket Leagues for the first time in their history and skipper Nigel Waller admits his side cannot wait to test themselves on the new stage.

Waller’s side stormed to the West Sussex Invitation League title last week to secure their spot in the newly-restructured Sussex League Division 5 West.

Broadwater will be joined in the new-look league by seven 2nd XIs from higher up the leagues while some matches switch from the 100-overs formats to 45-over win/lose matches.

Last year’s overseas wicket-keeper batsmen Corey Cogan will not be returning but fellow Aussie Sage Cook has been added to the ranks.

And Waller is confident his newly-promoted side can take all that in their stride and prove they are worthy of their place.

“We did really well last season and a place in the Sussex League is our reward,” he said. “We’ll be facing players, teams and going to grounds we never have done before but I feel that could work in our favour.

“It’s a new challenge and step, facing teams who know little about us. It’s quite exciting and I think having win/lose cricket will be a good thing.

“It’s about what is wanted at this level and I think this is what the vast majority voted for earlier in the year.

“There’s a lot of changes for us to adapt to this season but I’m sure we will cope.”
