Will leads the way with both bat and ball

SECOND XI ROUND-UP

- By Sam Hawthorn

HAMPSHIRE’S Will Smith showed his experience as he smashed 130 runs and bowled a tight ten-over spell as his side squeezed home against the

Unicorns in their opening match of the Second XI Trophy.

Smith opened the batting and sent Hants well on their way to posting a good total with his innings – lasting over three hours – the stand-out batting performance.

But the veteran, who is now 34 years old, showed no sign of fatigue and managed to bowl his allocated ten overs with impressive figures of 2-38 in a stunning all-round display. Two days later, Phil Salt led

Sussex to victory over Hampshire with his knock of 123 runs from 141 deliveries as Sussex successfully chased down 288 to win by seven wickets.

Hants’ Joe Barrett had compiled a first innings century to put his side in a good position but he was outdone by Salt and Co, who achieved the target with three overs to spare.

Hampshire now have a win and a loss from their first two fixtures of the tournament and top the table alongside Lancashire, while Sussex remain unbeaten after their only fixture.

Lancashire academy batsman Sam Oldham and Lancashire U19s’ George Burrows starred as their second XI hammered Leicestershire by 137 runs.

Oldham was unbeaten on 76 as he helped his side to 246-8 from their 50 overs. Burrows’ efforts with the ball got off to the perfect start as he took the wicket of Aadil Ali, whose leading edge popped up to Rob Jones at mid-wicket.

And Burrows continued to dent the Leicestershire chase, tearing through the Foxes’ middle order finishing with figures of 7-36 from just six overs.

And finally, Middlesex beat local rivals Surrey by 65 runs after setting a total of 332, Ryan Higgins top scored with 83 before Surrey fell short in their run chase.
