Back injury puts Northants’ Murphy on the sidelines
NORTHANTS wicketkeeper David Murphy will miss a “large chunk” of the current season after suffering a back injury.
Murphy, who is yet to play for the county this season, has had an operation on the injury though is keen to ensure his fitness is 100 per cent before battling for a place in the squad.
Northamptonshire’s head coach, David Ripley said: “Murph has battled his back issue for some time and now surgery is necessary which is a great shame.
“He has contributed a great deal to the squad in many different roles and I look forward to him making a speedy recovery and getting back into the squad as soon as possible.
Murphy, 27, signed a new deal with the county in October having taken 33 catches in last year’s County Championship as well as contributing 355 runs.
However, he was not part of the XI that beat Durham in lsat year’s T20 Blast final.
Murphy, who has made eight ODI appearances for Scotland, added: “Despite putting a lot of work in over preseason, once the season started, things began to deteriorate slightly and I’ve just not been able to play.
“I had an operation last week to repair the disc, which went very well.
“My focus now is getting fit again.
“I’m excited about the prospect of getting back in the team and ultimately help the club push for promotion in the County Championship.”
