Without a four-day win since the last week in May, Kent’s Jekyll and Hyde County Championship campaign ended in a first home defeat of the summer as Glamorgan romped home with almost four sessions to spare.

It was a pitifully low-key end to a summer that promised so much for Sam Northeast’s side and a season that left Kent with more issues left unresolved than questions convincingly answered.

After slumping to 39-4, Kent showed backbone in the form of Joe Denly, who notched his fourth championship hundred of the summer, finishing with 152 – but no other batsman reached 40.

Glamorgan’s reply followed Kent’s lead and, after a stint in the doldrums at 65-5, they rallied courtesy of knocks from Chris Cooke, Craig Meschede and Rory Smith.

Calum Haggett bagged 3-40 as the pick of Kent’s attack, but the home side’s lead of 73 should have still been greater.

Kent’s stomach for patient batting was no greater second time around and Michael Hogan used all his nouse to take his match tally to 10 as the hosts succumbed inside 44 overs.

Buoyed by their side’s comeback, Glamorgan openers Connor Brown and Nick Selman posted the highest stand of the match. Selman was finally dismissed for 70.

And David Lloyd had the last laugh, spanking Imran Qayyum for a six to win the game with more than a day to spare.
