England match ratings

The Cricket Paper - - FIRST TEST -

Alastair Cook

Faced just 23 balls for nine runs. Loose dismissal on third evening set tone for Australia to dominate. Worrying. 4/10

Mark Stoneman

Decent first-innings halfcentury and gutsed it out late on day three against Australia’s quicks. Good signs. 7/10

James Vince

Unable to follow up fine first-innings 83, but has already surpassed subterranean expectations. More of the same, please. 7/10

Joe Root (c)

Funky shift Smith fields but could captaincy not proactive. Must convert half-centuries if this series is to be a contest. 6/10

Dawid Malan

Looked good against the quicks and first-innings 56 was encouraging. But needs to find a way to play Nathan Lyon’s spin. 6/10

Moeen Ali

Shocker with the ball. Looked good with the bat but failure to kick on after two starts disappointing. 5/10

Jonny Bairstow

Decent behind the stumps and with bat on the fourth day but Australia psyched him out on the field. 5/10

Chris Woakes

Figures of 1-113 tell their story. Down on pace and no movement. Gritty with bat in second innings but had a poor Test. 4/10

Stuart Broad

Bowled brilliantly and batted bravely in first innings. England need more of the same throughout the series. 8/10

Jake Ball

Shocker. Was he totally over his ankle injury? Was toothless apart from David Warner’s firstinnings wicket. 3/10

James Anderson

Everything England needed their record alltime wicket-taker to be: threatening, miserly and in Australian faces. 8/10 CHRIS STOCKS
