Australia match ratings

- ALEX NAREY

Cameron Bancroft

Looked edgy in his first innings in Test cricket, but up and running in the second as Australia chased down their total 7/10

David Warner

Still the chief chatter in the Aussie ranks and played himself into form in second innings after being worked over in first 7/10

Usman Khawaja

Madness to think that your number three could be so hopeless against the turning ball. Serious issues to address 3/10

Steve Smith (c)

An innings for the ages. The captain is head and shoulders the best batsman in the world right now and it showed 10/10

Peter Handscomb

A baffling technique that has worked well for him to date, but England will fancy pinning him back in his crease this series 4/10

Shaun Marsh

Dropped a catch in England’s innnings but batted with great maturity to help rescue Australia with Smith 7/10

Tim Paine

Kept well and a fine stumping to remove Moeen Ali, but Aussies will need runs from him at number seven 6/10

Mitchell Starc

Up and down with the ball. Looked to be lacking zip until the third evening when Aussie tails were up 6/10

Pat Cummins

The best of the Aussie seamers who bowled with great pace and accuracy throughout. Fitness looked good! 7/10

Josh Hazlewood

Bounced back and bowled well in the second innings after poor spells in England’s first 6/10

Nathan Lyon

Australia’s best bowler with great control, turn and bounce. England will need to combat him with more confidence 8/10
