Economic week ahead
◆ Eurozone industrial production figures are expected to follow trends in the UK, where manufacturing has been sluggish recently and poor output has been holding back GDP growth. On Tuesday, a measure of US inflation – the producer price index – will be released. There will be more data from the eurozone as figures on the trade balance are released. Europe has yet to be significantly hit by Trump’s trade wars. Wednesday has a bumper set of UK releases, with inflation, housing loans and house prices emerging. There will also be information on eurozone car registrations, usually a code for the economy at large. The qualitative Beige Book will be released in the US, giving occasional insights into the real economy. The Bank of England releases its credit conditions survey on Thursday for quarter four of 2018, showing mortgage lending levels. There will also be housing data in the US, as figures on construction and inflation in the eurozone. On Friday, more retail sales numbers will be released, following reports of the worst Christmas for a decade.
