This showy, easy-to-grow perennial, an American native, is also known as Mexican hat plant, thimble flower and prairie cone flower. It blooms abundantly from July to October. Graced with large, Mexican hat-shaped blooms in auburn and yellow, it is ideal for any prairie-style planting scheme. American gardeners say that its foliage – deeply cleft leaves near the base – has a strong odour that works as a deer repellent.
