If you like the area but want bet­ter rail con­nec­tions, Ne­wark-onTrent, 14 miles south-east of Lin­coln, is a real gem – one of those “an­cient mar­ket towns” that re­ally lives up to its billing. There is a busy mar­ket square (above), a ru­ined cas­tle over­look­ing the river and an im­pres­sive num­ber of tree-lined res­i­den­tial streets with Ed­war­dian red-brick houses.

Gran­tham, 23 miles south of Lin­coln, is an­other op­tion. Its most fa­mous son is Sir Isaac New­ton, who at­tended the town gram­mar school; its most fa­mous daugh­ter is Mar­garet Thatcher, who was born there in 1925. Mod­ern Gran­tham is hardly Thatcheris­m at its best: the town suf­fers from un­sym­pa­thetic de­vel­op­ment in the old town cen­tre. But there are a few pleas­ant en­claves and prices are com­pet­i­tive.

On the other side of Lin­coln, Gains­bor­ough, 15 miles to the north-west of the city, is a sprawl­ing mar­ket town on the Lin­colnshireN­ot­ting­hamshire border, with an 18th-cen­tury bridge across the Trent. Parts of the town are quite scruffy, but there are rea­son­able shops and ameni­ties, one or two el­e­gant res­i­den­tial streets and very com­pet­i­tive house prices.
