Family on the doorstep

When Heena and Bryan Pontin found out that a brandnew development was going to be built on their doorstep, they made sure they were among the first people to move in.

“Because I’ve lived in this area and grew up in Stanmore, I was instantly attracted to this site,” says Heena, 36. “We wanted to be close to my family; we could see this was the perfect solution.

“We knew we wanted a big place, and we loved the fact that the site is beautifully landscaped, that there’s a gym, a concierge service, and, best of all, a lake right in front of where we live.”

After living with Heena’s parents for a year, the couple moved in to their brandnew, topfloor, threebedroom apartment, in 2009. And in due course their family grew with the birth of daughter Amisha.

But that wasn’t the end of it. For in 2013, who should move in to the adjoining, top-floor flat but Heena’s younger brother Vijay, 32.

“To start with, it was just for investment purposes,” says Vijay, “but then I had to start work really early in the morning. So it made sense for me to move in.

“Also, every so often, I think it’s handy for them to have me living next door. It means I can be useful every now and then.”

Apart from having no distance to walk to borrow a cup of sugar, the other big bonus for Vijay is that the Tube station (Canons Park) is just a three-minute walk away.

So with the removal of just one piece of glass wall panelling, separating their roof gardens, brother and sister have established a top-floor territory with views far and wide.

“There are some really good schools round here, and there is a really good community atmosphere,” says Heena, who works as a visual merchandising manager for H&M.

“On top of which, you get that gentle sound of water, which makes you feel like you’re on holiday.

“There is no reason for us to move, because we have everything we want.”

And all this on what, not many years ago, was a rather ugly, 15-acre site, which served as a base for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. Now it’s a shiny, new community, which will consist of 789 new homes and open green space.

It’s not only the on-site gym that is a 24-hour facility. From September, the Jubilee Line will be running through-the-night trains (as will the Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria and Central Lines).

“We love living here, and it’s great that my parents live close by, and my brother even closer,” says Heena.
