May­er­ling, Ken­neth MacMil­lan’s 1978 drama­ti­sa­tion of the dou­ble sui­cide of Crown Prince Ru­dolf of Aus­tria-Hun­gary and his young mis­tress in 1889, is the dark­est and (for its cast) most de­mand­ing of all his full-evening works, and survives end­less re­watch­ings.
