This second instalment of Smith’s seasonal quartet is just as topical as the first, Autumn, but the cast is (mostly) new. It’s a Christmas tale – of Sophia, a former businesswoman now holed up in a country pile, and her son, Art. Grief and pain loom large, but Smith’s quizzical, feather-light prose radiates humanity and charm.
