Paul McGuigan, who went on to make Lucky Number Slevin, is best known for this fierce and shocking film, based on the play by Louis Mellis and David Scinto. It is set in two eras – the Sixties and the present – and tells the story of a psychopathic gangland killer, played with mesmerising intensity by Paul Bettany, who is summoned by Freddie Mays, “The Butcher of Mayfair” (played by David Thewlis), to join his gang.
