THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS

BBC Two, 3.05pm

-

Orson Welles’s follow-up to Citizen Kane (see Sunday) was cut to 88 minutes by anxious studio bosses, the

ending changed, and the director’s cut lost forever. What survives is a marvellous high-society drama set in Indianapolis, with Joseph Cotten as a snubbed suitor returning years later as a successful car maker. Will he get a second chance for happiness with his now-widowed first love?
