Films of the week ASSASSIN’S CREED

MGM’s glorious musical version of The Philadelphia Story brings together a cast to die for: Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Grace Kelly.
Cole Porter’s songs have great wit as well as melodies, while Kelly’s unreal beauty more than compensates for her inadequacy as a singer. Despite their numerous TV appearances together (notably at Christmas), this is only one of two movies starring Crosby and Sinatra.

Starring Michael Fassbender, this action film is an obedient adaptation of a popular video-game series about a league of trans-historical assassins, in which two secretive factions vie over humanity’s right to free will. At the centre of the struggle is a mystical artefact which contains the seeds of humanity’s self-determination. Despite an excellent cast, including Marion Cottilard, it feels like good work in service of a bad idea.
