For the past decade director Xavier Alford has struggled to come to terms with a rare degenerati­ve condition, Guillain-Barré syndrome, that is slowly paralysing him. This harrowing film is an attempt to process his condition and Alford doesn’t pull his punches – among the most heart-wrenching scenes are those with his wife, Emma, who pointedly notes that she can’t participat­e in the film because “you’ve trained me not to talk about it and I don’t know how to go there now.” SH
