WATCH IMAGINE: WE’LL BE BACK?

The UK’s performing arts sector has been one of the most tangible cultural casualties of the pandemic, with the vast majority of our theatre, ballet, live music and comedy venues lying empty and unused for almost a year now. But anyone hoping Alan Yentob’s documentary might offer solace to the tens of thousands of people currently unable to make their living from the arts (let alone the millions for whom attending live performances is a much-missed component of our lives) should note the bleak question mark in the title.

Sure, he finds plenty of hope and defiance,

perhaps best exemplified by the South London collective 846 Live, for whom the conjunction of Covid-19 and Black Lives Matter has sparked an impulse to create work and get out on the streets to perform it. But despite attempts to adapt, there’s not much confidence among the more established arts leaders he meets here – among them baritone Roderick Williams, dance star Carlos Acosta, and Tamara Rojo, artistic director of English National Ballet – that, in the short term at least, the arts sector will face anything other than a struggle to return to pre-pandemic levels of viability.
