OLYMPICS 2020
South Africa v British & Irish Lions Saturday, Sky Main Event, 3.30pm (kick-off 5pm)
The Lions gave little away tactically during their early tour games in South Africa, and Warren Gatland delivered no shortage of surprises with his team selection for this first Test against the Springboks in Cape Town. Ali Price is preferred to Conor Murray at scrum half, a statement of bold attacking intent, while Elliot Daly fills the outside centre berth. Alun Wyn Jones starts as captain following his miraculous recovery from injury. In the absence of Miles Harrison, commentary duties fall to Conor McNamara. He’ll be joined by former Lions Will Greenwood and Sam Warburton, along with referee Nigel Owens. Alex Payne hosts the coverage from the studio, where Ronan O’Gara and Ian McGeechan will offer analysis. The Lions haven’t lost a series since South Africa 12 years ago; they will be desperate to set the record straight.
Week One
Saturday-Friday, BBC One & Two
The most surreal Olympics in modern history begins in earnest in Tokyo this morning. Yesterday’s opening ceremony played out before an empty Japan National Stadium as
authorities aim to keep a stranglehold on Covid. The men’s cycling road race offers an immediate shot at gold for Team GB, with 2018 Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas leading the charge (BBC One, 3am). GB’s women’s football team are also in action against hosts Japan (11.30am), while Adam Peaty competes in the
100m breaststroke heats (from 11am). Tomorrow, Jade Jones aims for her third consecutive Olympic gold in the taekwondo 57kg (1.30pm), and Jonny Brownlee competes in the men’s triathlon (10.30pm).
