FINDING MICHAEL
Moving, exasperating and inspiring in equal parts, this documentary follows Spencer Matthews as he commissions an expedition to Mount Everest, where his brother Michael died in 1999, just after having become the youngest Briton to reach the top. The Made in Chelsea escapee here cuts a much more sympathetic and personable figure as he goes in search of his brother’s body after receiving a photo of a body taken near the summit. Yet he also seems determined to remain a closed book emotionally: statements such as “I’m really looking forward to reliving what he went through in those final days,” surely demand a little more unpacking.
Nevertheless, this is a gripping and powerful film, punctuated by moments of deflation and uplift as hope gives way to disappointment and vice versa. Cutting between footage of his team’s efforts (Matthews sensibly stays at base camp while the experts use knowledge and technology to conduct the search) and film of his brother’s ascent, the camerawork makes abundantly clear the potential risks and rewards of both expeditions. The climax is all the more affecting for being so unexpected. Gabriel Tate
