RUGBY UNION Rugby World Cup 2023: England v South Africa Cricket World Cup 2023: England v South Africa

Sat, ITV1, 7.15pm Sat, Sky Main Event, 9am

-

Few would have predicted before the tournament that England would be the only remaining northern hemisphere nation left standing at the semi-final stage of this Rugby World Cup. And yet here we are. Ireland and France crashed out, cruelly, to New Zealand and South Africa respectively, Wales came up disappointingly short against Argentina, but England – the only northern hemisphere side to have ever won the World Cup – scraped past a spirited Fiji. Steve Borthwick’s side have a monumental task ahead of them at the Stade de France (kick-off 8pm), against one of the greatest rugby teams ever assembled. The Boks, led by the magisterial Siya Kolisi, defeated England in the final in Yokohama four years ago, and the gap has only widened since. The victor will play either New Zealand or Argentina (who played last night) in next Saturday’s final. The third-place play-off is Friday (ITV1, 7.30pm).

The World Cup continues with England in trouble. Jos Buttler’s side lost two of their opening three games and now take on a well-oiled South Africa team at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, with victory essential to keep their hopes of a semi-final

place alive. England also face Sri Lanka in Bangalore on Thursday (Sky Main Event, 9am).

British Champions Day Sat, ITV1, 1pm

The retirement of Frankie Dettori drags on, so here’s another milestone: his last day of racing in Britain.

The Italian will ride King of Steel in the Champion Stakes (3.45pm) – the highlight of Champions Day at Royal Ascot, which marks the end of the flat racing season.
