FORMULA 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix FOOTBALL Manchester City v Liverpool
Sunday, Sky F1, 11.30am (start 1pm); highlights, Channel 4, 5.30pm
The curtain comes down on the season with possibly the worst Grand Prix on the calendar – at the Yas Marina Circuit, which resembles the car park of a suburban shopping centre. Everyone who is not Max Verstappen will be glad to see its long straights and blocky corners, because, at last, his pulverizing, merciless dominance is brought to an end – for this year at least. The Dutchman’s victory in
Las Vegas took his total to 18 victories this season, with one more on the horizon. Remarkably, Mercedes are positioned to finish second in the Constructors’ Championship, with Ferrari suffering a dismal end to the season following some early promise. Lewis Hamilton has again proved the consummate performer in a sub-par vehicle. Alongside George Russell, he needs to outperform Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to protect Mercedes’ four point lead.
Saturday, Sky Main Event, 11am (kick-off 12.30pm)
Manchester City left Liverpool in the dust last season, but Jürgen Klopp’s heavy-metal football is headlining once again. This Premier League clash at the Etihad will reveal whether Liverpool can challenge
City’s stranglehold over England’s top flight. Fellow contenders to the crown Arsenal face Brentford later in the day (TNT Sports 1, 4.45pm). The Champions League resumes on Tuesday, as Newcastle take on Paris Saint-Germain (TNT 2, 7pm) and Man City face RB Leipzig (TNT 1, 7.45pm). On Wednesday, Manchester United play
Galatasaray S.K. (TNT 1, 5pm) and Arsenal host RC Lens (TNT 2, 7pm). In the women’s game, England face the Netherlands on Friday in the Nations League (ITV4, 7pm).
