THE SUN HAS GOT HIS HAT (BACK ON)
Right then, are you ready to “holiday”? There is a heatwave coming our way, which, for anyone planning a staycation, is wonderful news.
Personally, I couldn’t be happier, as the gloomy, rainy weather does nothing for anyone’s mood. But also, obviously, it’s a chance to embrace and expand the summer wardrobe.
First thing I’m looking for is a hat. I have been accused of many fashion faux pas in my lifetime, but none greater than my penchant for extremely large sun hats. It’s not the scale of the hat that’s the issue, it’s the fact they are too big to carry in a bag or a suitcase. I know, I know – chance would be a fine thing with so many countries turning amber in front of our eyes, but I remain optimistic. So, partly with suitcase-packing in mind, before taking the plunge, I did my research.
I’ve bought a foldable hat by newly launched hat brand, Le Hat. Rae Feather, a designer known for her monogrammed basket bags, launched Le Hat during lockdown and, frankly, finally provides the answer to all my hat-buying woes. Eugenia Kim’s straw hat with wide ribbon trim is a thing of beauty.
I also love the simplicity of Gigi Burris, a milliner who trained at Parsons, New
York’s famed art school. I do love a good boater, but again, this is one for a hat box when travelling, and what better hat box to carry than one from Lock & Co Hatters of St James’s Street fame, a one-stop shop for all that is chic in headwear this summer? Subtle, elegant; straw hats are so refined, which is exactly why I love to throw a curveball in my bag that goes by the name of a turban by Julia Clancey. Colourful with a matching face mask, wear Clancey’s turbans with brightly coloured kaftans by the pool. Very Miami housewife. Where’s my butler? I need a cocktail, one that matches my headgear.
